Acne While Pregnant? Dermatologist Shares Best Skincare Ingredients | #SHORTS

Getting acne while pregnant is not only incredibly frustrating, but it can also be incredibly confusing in terms of what skincare ingredients should be used versus avoided. Always listen to your personal healthcare team as they are the ones most familiar with you, your skin, and any other health conditions you may have, but here’s what I give the green light to:

👍🏼Benzoyl peroxide – 2.5%-4% is my sweet spot for facial acne. If you’re using it as a cleanser, make sure to let it sit on the skin for 5 minutes before rinsing.

👍🏼Hydroxy acids – This includes ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and mandelic acid.

👍🏼Clindamycin – A prescription topical antibiotic that is particularly helpful if you struggle with red or tender pimples. It should always be used in combo with benzoyl peroxide.

👍🏼Azelaic acid – The best data out there is for 15% and 20% preparations, which require a prescription in the US. OTC versions may also be helpful and are sometimes better tolerated.

👍🏼Sulfur – An underrated acne and rosacea-fighting ingredient, IMO. This can be prescription or found OTC.

It’s also very important to understand that hormone fluctuations during pregnancy (and/or having to stop some of your not-pregnancy-approved treatments) can make pregnancy acne particularly stubborn and at times minimally responsive to topical therapy alone. Don’t hesitate to seek out the guidance of a dermatologist, especially if your acne is painful or leaving scars behind.

Do you have a favorite pregnancy-approved acne-fighting topical product?
